Päijälä Hillfort (Linnavuori)
The Päijälä Hillfort in Kuhmoinen is an ancient site offering breathtaking views to the southeast, where Lake Päijänne shimmers on the horizon about 8 kilometers away.
Päijälä’s hillfort is one of around 70 national “Adopt a Monument” sites overseen by the Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum. Local volunteer organizations maintain and preserve these sites. In this case, the Kuhmoinen Homestead Association is the official adopter of the hillfort.
The association has taken responsibility for the site's upkeep:
· built and maintains the stairs that lead up the hill
· provided resting spots and improved signage
· upgraded Linnavuorentie, the road that leads to a parking area below the hill
Address: Linnavuorentie 115, 17800 Kuhmoinen
Informational signs can be found both in the parking area and at the top of the hill, with additional local info boards along the trail. From the parking area, a short wood chip-covered path leads to the start of the stairs.
Linnavuori is located on nature preserve and is also by law protected heritage area. Therefore camping and making camp fire is prohibited. Visitors are kindly requested not to leave any trash, like picknick food packages, empty bottles and cans in the area.
The Kuhmoisten Kuhmurat mountain biking trail also passes nearby, making this a great stop for cyclists as well.
This is an excellent destination, whether for a short visit or a longer hike and exploration.
A Hill with a View — and History
The hillfort rises about 45 meters above Lake Saaresjärvi, offering stunning panoramic views:
· east-northeast to Lake Saaresjärvi
· southeast toward Lake Päijänne
The hill’s slopes are steep — nearly vertical on three sides — so access is only possible from the northwest via path and stairs. Along the path from the Saaresjärvi side, you'll spot a large boulder split from the cliff, known as Pirun Kamari ("The Devil’s Chamber"). It resembles a gate, but its use as such is unknown.
Top Rating from the Finnish Heritage Agency
In a nationwide survey of culturally significant archaeological sites (VARK) in 2018, Päijälä Hillfort scored 17 out of 18 points. Excavations conducted between 1984–86 uncovered:
· foundations of several buildings
· stone hearths
· many artifacts, including spearheads, arrowheads, knives, axes, brooches, flint steels, forked stick to hold a fire torch, and fragments of copper kettles
On the hill’s western edge, the stone foundation of a defensive wall remains. It’s believed that a palisade once stood on top — now long decayed.
A Nationally Valuable Landscape (VAMA)
In 2021, Päijälä Hillfort was also named for a Nationally Valuable Landscape Area, one of 186 such areas in Finland.
Kuhmoinen is home to one other VARK site: the Pyhänpää Rock Paintings — though those are significantly more difficult to access than Linnavuori.
